Translation

"to urge", "to exhort", "to encourage", "to persuade" sombeody to do sth. (in the case of textual culture to issue, compose, or print a text).

Description

This is a verb quite frequently found in colophons in varied standard phrases. Due to context (meaning that in a colophon the exhortation is usually completed) one often finds the use of the second stem bskul.

1) A phrase encountered most often is: [person A] (marked by the ergative-marker) bskul (ba'i) ngor [person B] (often also with ergative, depending on the following verb of course) composed such and such workliterally: "in the face of having been exhorted by person A, person B composed ..."
2) Another variety: [person] (marked by the ergative-marker) bskul ba'i bzhed pa bskong pa "satisfying the wish of having been urged by someone".

It seems that we often find skul ba in connection with the adverb nan tan (gyis), in this case probably best translated as "persistently" (further evidence has to solidify that).

A passage containing both can be found in the colophon to Karma 'phrin las pa's (1456–1539) commentary rGyal po do hā'i ṭī ka, fol. 27v (bold print added by editor): rdor 'dzin chen po bstan pa rgya mtsho bas gser gyi me tog ras dkar po'i cod pan dang [l.2] bcas pa yang yang rtsal te rtsal nan tan gyi bskul ba'i bzhed pa bskong pa dang/ nyams rtogs kyi rgyan ldan ri khrod dbang phyug mang po dang gsung rab rab 'byam smra ba'i bshes gnyen [l.3] du mas bskul ba'i ngor dge slong chos smra ba karma 'phrin las pa ming dngos dpal phyogs thams cad las rnam par rgyal ba'i lha zhes bya bas dkar po'i lo la yol gzims khang du dbu gtsug [l.4] ste

The basic construction can be rendered as "... having satisfied the wish of the persistent exhortation by ... and in the face of having been urged by .... , I, the dGe slong, the dharma teacher,  Karma 'phrin las pa ..."
