ཡིག་རྙིང་། yig rnying

Headword

ཡིག་རྙིང་། yig rnying

Translation

ancient text, old orthography

Description

The term is used by Mi pham three times in a passage describing his editorial concerns and policies while preparing the xylograph edition of Rong zom pa's Collected Works. In two instances he clearly uses it in the sense of "ancient texts", while in one of them it occurs as a part of the compound yig rnying gi brda, which means "old orthography." In the third occasion, however, he uses the term yig rnying alone to denote "old orthography," in the context of the issue of standardization of the old orthographies found in the manuscripts containing Rong zom pa's works that served as the master copies for the xylographic edition.[OA]
